I can’t count how many times I used the “… but I’m eating for two!” excuse this weekend, starting with the hearty breakfast / lunch at Aloha Factory for some no-frill Hawaiian feast.
As if the order of the gigantic macadamia nut pancakes drenched in vanilla pudding was not enough, I had to get TWO orders of char shu tacos, all while picking the food from Kevin’s combo plate. Boy, food here is so good. I’m not even a huge Hawaiian food fan and I adore this mom-and-pop joint!
Then for dinner, we went to Gatten Sushi in Monterey Park for some revolving sushi goodness. Since I can’t eat raw fish, many of the sushi I ate here were very non-traditional, like fried green bean sushi! I would usually avoid these funky nigiri and rolls, but I can’t be too choosey right now. But to my surprise, some of these creative sushi are pretty good. Just stay away from fried salmon skin though. It sounded good at first, but it was tough and kinda yucky.
Natto is definitely my best friend during pregnancy.
Another wonderful day – completed the Pasadena Rock and Roll Half Marathon with Tiffany and Shannon. Shannon ran her first running race, Tiffany reached her PR, and I survived the hills. YAY! The two rice balls I had for breakfast really helped me during the latter part of the race.
Lunch (12:00 p.m.): Hawaiian feast at Aloha Food Factory for the post-race celebration. The Macadamia pancake we shared hit the spot.
I ordered the Kalbi plate but I think my eyes were bigger than my stomach, especially after the run when your body is too tired to digest. I hardly made a dent on my lunch.
Dinner (7:30 p.m.): After every race, I go to a grocery store and allow myself to purchase anything I want. Instead of picking up all the junk foods, my body wanted the onion, avocado, and smoked salmon salad (my staple) with sourdough bread. So, that’s what’s for dinner! I had a glass of red wine to toast for the accomplishment!
I allowed myself to have a few scoops of Haagen-Dazs ice cream (vanilla beans and strawberry).
Time to relax and enjoy the evening!
I am surrounded by so many Hawaii-loving friends … but then again, who doesn’t love the islands full of good people, delicious food, and picturesque scenery? Two of my running pals T and S are Hawaii-ophite. T travels to Hawaii almost every year, and S is actually from Kailua. And my fiancé, with the collection of Hawaiian shirts in his closet, he might as well be Hawaiian. So, it’s no surprise that we often find ourselves dashing for a Hawaiian lunch after our weekly Saturday morning runs around Pasadena’s Rose Bowl.
Ever since my fiancé introduced us to Aloha Food Factory, a tiny shack that looks like a converted Taco Bell in Alhambra a few months ago, we’ve been hooked. We fantasize about the food that awaits us and we often rely on the mouthwatering images of Kalua Pig, Spam Musubi, and its famous Macadamia Nut Pancakes to get us through the final mile around Rose Bowl.
I was never a huge fan of Hawaiian food until this place. I really enjoy the food here, as well as the kick-back atmosphere. The place is small and dive, but I really enjoy the fact that it feels like you’re sitting in someone’s Hawaiian mom’s kitchen.
Our lunch always begins with a can of Hawaii Sun’s Pass-O–Guava Nectar juice, or POG for locals, followed by combo plates piled with proteins like Teriyaki Chicken, Portuguese Sausages, Pork Char Siu, and Kalua Pig. The side of Potato / Macaroni Salad is always a treat, although we are very aware of the calories that’s contained in the innocent-looking scoop!
Hawaiian food is not healthy by any means. Aloha Food Factory is probably a place that we can come only after running beforehand, with six miles under our soon-to-be bloated belt. We eat, therefore we run indeed.
