What Do You Mean You Don’t Eat No Meat? Lawry’s Prime Ribs

Dear My Best Friend Maya,

There’s something I’ve been wanting to tell you but I just didn’t know how. I knew that this news would disappoint you, and even upset you, and I was searching for the perfect way to tell you without hurting your feelings. But I can no longer hold a secret of this magnitude to myself. Please don’t hate me when I say that … I gave up eating meat.

No, it’s not a typo. It’s true … I gave up eating anything that once moo-ed, oinked, crowed or quacked (and let me not forget “baaaa”ed). I know that this would come as a total shock since you and I dual-handedly kept the beef industry alive by consuming a shit-load of meat. Please don’t think that our weekly run to Grandma Kim’s for sizzling Korean BBQ for lunch (and risking being socially unacceptable at the office with the garlic stink oozing out of our pores) and our regular visits to Lawry’s for prime ribs (and passing out on the way home from food coma) were all a ruse. They were all real.

Don’t you worry, girlie, I won’t be gone forever. I’ll be back in a month or two, I promise. I just want to see what it’s like on the other side of the world for a bit. And when I return, we’ll take on Flemmings, Ruth Chris and Gyu-Kaku in style again. And yes, our ploy to hijack the silver cart at Lawry’s is still on. Until then, I leave you with these images from our last prime ribs outing (which has the same affect as men drooling over sexy centerfolds in Playboy magazine).

XOXO,
Hirono

  1. You know I am crying right now right? To know that you are cheating on me by going to Lawry’s without me???……

    I miss it soooo much!!…:):):)
And of course I miss you too…..

    Maya

  2. No, Maya, these pictures are from OUR last Lawry’s outing when you and Shaun took me and Kevin out. I think the top one is Shaun’s and the bottom one is yours. I would NEVER go to Lawry’s without you!

    Love,
    Hirono

  3. omg you guys argue like a married couple! LOL

but hirono seriously, i’m with you on this… and no offense but this picture is the ONLY photo that grossed me out on your blog… that’s one big slob of meat or flesh… or dead animal… whatever you call it but that alone made me not want to eat such bloody oily thing!

i’m also starting to read “fast food nation” and all my vegan friends told me that book had something to do with them giving up meat. i’m scared to find out though… but i think sooner the better… (i gave up pork a long time ago after seeing “Babe” and other 4 legged animals, but it would be hard for me to give up chicken…) vegetarians always say “less legs, the better!”

good luck on your meat-free month! there’s always soy.

  4. How are you doing with ‘I don’t eat no meat’ diet?…
How is it on the other side?
I, in the meantime, am still eating ‘cow that mooeed’ meat … with ‘the stinkin’ garlic smell that stays in your clothes and hair until the next day’ sauce the last 2 days and I am so sorry to say that I am enjoying it tremendously…..

    I don’t think I can live without meat for a whole month!… 3 days maybe…but that’s pushing it…

    Oh how I MISS YOU!!!!

    Maya

  5. Hi Saori,

My friend gave me a copy of Fast Food Nation a few yeas back but I haven’t started reading it yet .. I guess I’m scared too! But maybe I should start soon. Even thought it’s been years since I first watched it, I think the documentary, “Suspersize Me,” really had an impact on me. I pretty much gave up fast food right then and there!

Oh yeah, thank goodness for soy! Glad we love tofu and other meat-free substitutes!

    Love,
    Hirono

  6. Hey Girlie!

I can smell the garlic all the way here! Hee hee. I went to Korean BBQ the other day and still had a feast even without eating meat! I had vegetable bibimbap and tofu hot pot! Mmm… I miss you like craaaazy!

    Love,
    Hirono
